Ce texte analyse une expérience de terrain à propos des actes de torture commis par des policiers militaires de l’armée américaine dans la prison d’Abou Ghraïb en Irak. La méthodologie adoptée pour la recherche a soulevé deux enjeux liés à la science anthropologique et à sa pratique. Tout d’abord, l’éthique de la recherche, quoique considérée comme nécessaire, est critiquée dans la mesure où son cadre est trop strict et juge les recherches abordant des institutions de pouvoir de la même manière que toute autre recherche où le chercheur est engagé dans un rapport de pouvoir qui lui donne avantage. Ensuite, l’auteure tente d’engager un débat sur le rôle des émotions du chercheur dans une recherche. La conclusion soulève plusieurs questions qui lient ces deux enjeux de l’éthique et des émotions.
