Abstract
Au Québec, comme dans le reste de l'Amérique du Nord, l'administration scolaire fait partie du paysage urbain; chaque ville aussi bien que chaque village est doté d'un corps public chargé d'assurer le bon fonctionnement des services scolaires pour toute la population de son territoire. Durant 125 ans, la commission scolaire locale a été au Québec le seul organisme public directement responsable devant la population de l'administration de la chose scolaire. Depuis quelques années, de nouveaux corps publics sont apparus, en particulier la commission scolaire régionale et la corporation du collège d'enseignement général et professionnel (CEGEP). Mais avant d'analyser la place de l'organisation scolaire en milieu urbain, il sera utile de commencer par remonter aux origines des commissions scolaires et à leur première évolution.
