Electrically Conductive Polymer-based Blends for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Gas Diffusion Layers

Abstract
Two electrically conductive polymer-based blends were carefully formulated, using twin-screw extrusion process, in order to develop porous gas diffusion layers (GDLs) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Two low-viscosity polymers, polyamide 11 (PA11) and Polyethylene terephtalate (PET), were selected as the matrix phase. Blend electrical conductivity was ensured by using a mixture of high specific surface area carbon black and synthetic flake graphite. Final GDL porosity was generated by melt blending the PA11 or the PET matrix with polystyrene (PS) followed by PS extraction with tetrahydrofuran, THF, solvent. Blends processability and final GDL conductivity and porosity were compared with those recently obtained by Yakisir et al. (1, 2). PA-11 was found to be the most suitable polymer for this study since it led to best GDL porosity and through-plane conductivity.
