Les deux expressions figuratives « écran de fumée » et « morsure sur le réel » résument la double orientation générale de la théorie sémiotique exposée dans Du sens , avec la tension qu’elle manifeste. Elles anticipent les recherches actuelles des sémioticiens (concurrence entre principe d’immanence et principe de réalité, intensification de la référence phénoménologique, développement de la sémiotique du sujet, de la présence et des pratiques). L’article s’attache à saisir successivement les propriétés de l’écriture greimassienne, l’enjeu du syncrétisme disciplinaire qu’elle met en oeuvre, la conception fondamentale du sens comme « paraître » et ses implications quant à la construction d’un métalangage et de modèles. On discute ainsi la place centrale de Du Sens dans l’histoire de la réflexion sémiotique et on en suggère une « lecture » actualisée.
