Abstract
The doctorial dissertation, never the most felicitous of literary forms, is nowadays worse than ever. Oversubscribed graduate programs, student commitment to turgid prose, and indifferent editorial practices have contributed to the situation, which is exacerbated by the economics of scholarly publishing. The author does not see change looming on the horizon.
