Cerillo, Izuzquiza, Egido, (2013) indican que la inclusion/integracion de las personas con discapacidad intelectual en el ambito universitario es una practica que se realiza desde hace varias decadas en paises del mundo anglosajon: Canada, Estados Unidos, Irlanda, Australia y Finlandia siendo el programa canadiense On Campus quizas uno de los mas documentados (Bowman y Skinner, 1994; McDonald et al., 1997; Utdisky et al., 1998; citado por Cerillo, Izuzquiza, Egido, 2013). En Mexico esta practica es relativamente reciente y se lleva acabo –hasta el momento- por solamente tres universidades del pais
