Cet article porte sur les rapports qui différencient enseignement et culture selon la culture de référence. Un premier clivage existe entre les tenants de la transmission du patrimoine culturel et les défenseurs de la pédagogie centrée sur l’enfant ; un second, entre les promoteurs d’une conception éducative axée soit sur les compétences, soit sur la culture. Ces conceptions ne sont pas nécessairement dichotomiques, comme le montre la récente réforme de l’éducation au Québec. Toutefois, les concepteurs des programmes de formation n’ont pas répondu au voeu de rehaussement culturel formulé par le groupe de travail sur la réforme du curriculum. Aussi, la culture doit-elle reprendre la place qui lui était assignée, l’enseignant étant considéré comme un passeur culturel et comme le lieur du sensé au senti dans le cadre d’une éducation à la compréhension et à la relation.
