Abstract
Through methods varying from complex economic theory to rants on CNBC, the world of finance has developed an image of itself through the metaphor of a game. This metaphor can be examined through an analysis of the representation of capitalism in video and board games, and the emerging theory and practice of gamification, which describes the application of game structures to everyday life. This form of gamification creates an image of the world whose focuses and exclusions reinforce and naturalize the tenets of neoliberal ideology. Gamification emphasizes the neoliberal models of rationality and systems optimization, which exclude “externalities” such as ethics and risk. In this way the game serves as a useful sustaining metaphor for financial capital.
