L’hypothèse centrale est que les femmes sont plus sensibles que les hommes à certains messages des gouvernements et que les deux groupes entretiennent des rapports différents avec l’État. Dans le contexte du référendum québécois de 1995, cette hypothèse a été soumise à un modèle d’analyse socioculturel de la dynamique électorale, la théorie du dépistage. Celle-ci retrace le processus cognitif par lequel les électeurs arrivent à déterminer leurs intentions de vote après des étapes d’observation, d’évaluation, de discussion et de décision. Dans le cas précis de l’appui partisan des Québécoises entre 1994 et 1995, le modèle permet de mieux comprendre pourquoi les femmes francophones ont légèrement favorisé le camp du OUI à la fin de la campagne référendaire.
