Prendre en compte les interrogations métaphysiques des enfants est une grande tendance de la littérature de jeunesse contemporaine. L’enfant n’est plus considéré comme un petit être innocent, mais comme un sujet qui se pose des questions fondamentales sur le sens de la vie et du monde. L’enfant fait à chaque instant l’expérience de l’étonnement devant le monde. La question de la Vérité notamment le passionne : Qu’est-ce qui est vrai, qu’est-ce qui est faux ? Quelle est la différence entre une croyance et un savoir, etc. La littérature de jeunesse permet de réfléchir sur ces questions métaphysiques. À l’école élémentaire, les enseignants peuvent ainsi mettre en réseau des ouvrages sur ces questions et engager, à partir des lectures, des discussions philosophiques.
