Abstract
Abstract Viewed internationally, the subject of economic history has been going through an extremely difficult period during the past two or three decades. In quantitative terms this means that the number of students electing for the discipline is falling and the number of posts in the subject at universities and institutions of higher learning is diminishing. Qualitatively speaking the crisis means that the discipline's position as an independent subject is being weakened and that many practitioners feel uncertain of their professional identity.
