Abstract
Cet article se veut un effort de construction théorique, sous la forme d’une typologie, du mouvement du nouvel âge. Dans un premier temps, l’auteur présente une revue critique d’une partie de la littérature scientifique concernant le nouvel âge pour ensuite proposer, à partir de ces lectures, une définition sociologique du phénomène. Le réseau du nouvel âge n’est pas sans lien avec un certain relativisme moral, et c’est surtout grâce à cette idéologie à caractère religieux que le mouvement peut justifier son existence. Beaucoup de tenants du nouvel âge continuent d’entretenir des liens avec la société séculière et ils ne sont pas nécessairement tous des marginaux. Les glissements entre le relativisme et le pluralisme sont possibles à l’intérieur du réseau complexe de la « conspiration du Verseau ». Ce réseau s’articule autour de quatre grandes dimensions: sociale, culturelle, ésotéro-occultiste et biopsychologique. Ces quatre dimensions dans lesquelles évoluent les tenants du nouvel âge tissent des liens virtuels entre des individus de toutes les couches de la société occidentale, formant ainsi une nouvelle façon de vivre la religion au quotidien.
