Abstract
In spring 2000 an E. coli water contamination killed seven people and made thousands ill in Walkerton, Ontario. This account analyses accounts of these events from the perspective of risk society theory, agricultural history, speed theory, and the work of Michel Serres. It addresses the temporal implications of various causal explanations for this disaster, the increasing cross-species mobility of contaminating agents, the speedup of biological processes, and the challenges such changes pose to both evolutionary and social Darwinist beliefs. In addition to the necessary critique of neoliberal environmental policy, the article reflects on the challenges these issues jointly present to cultural, theoretical and political approaches to environmental change.
