Abstract
Cet article s’attache à mettre au jour les dynamismes d’une croissance villageoise, celle de Louiseville, dans le contexte plus large de la montée de l’économie de marché qui transforme le monde rural au XIX e siècle. Après avoir observé l’extension spatiale de Louiseville et la croissance de sa population, l’analyse porte sur les facteurs de développement que sont les rapports d’échange qu’entretient le monde villageois avec l’espace rural ambiant, les paroisses de l’arrière-pays et la socio-économie du pays saint-pierrais, et la poussée de diverses formes industrielles qui est essentiellement le fait d’un entrepreneurship local dynamique et sensible aux mouvements du marché.
