Abstract

Leukocyte recruitment into sites of inflammation requires the activation of vascular endothelium by inflammatory mediators leading to a cascade of events. These include leukocyte rolling followed by leukocyte adhesion, and ultimately migration out of the circulation and into the inflammatory site. Although much attention has been attributed to the pro-adhesive mechanisms involved in leukocyte recruitment, the potential down-regulating or inhibitory factors that reduce leukocyte recruitment have not been studied in great detail. The purpose of this overview is to highlight some of the evidence that nitric oxide (NO) produced by the lining of blood vessels acts as an endogenous inhibitor of neutrophil adhesion to vascular endothelium.
