Abstract
This is a stunning book which brings us face to face with a brilliant and courageous middle aged woman who faces a tenacious emotional crisis, descends into the abyss of her own mind, to emerge again eleven years later, strong and resilient. In a way it is a traditional descent into madness tale, bearing an eerie resemblance to the descent into hell that we find in classical literature. Unlike most such descents, however, during most of this period Bobby remains not only functional, but also an exceptionally productive, not to mention creative human being – mounting gallery exhibits, engaging in performance art, attending to the needs of her tight-knit family. Moreover, an artist to be taken seriously, throughout, she paints and draws. From her initial entrance into the world of the mental health establishment upon being diagnosed ‘borderline personality disorder’ and admitted into Pine Street Day Centre, Bobby at once reflects on her lived experiences and makes these experience come alive by producing initially one picture a day, and eventually one picture of week. While there is a smattering of verbal diary – and it is integral – this highly unique art book is largely a collection of those paintings and drawings.
