La problématique de l’Un et du multiple est, chez Plotin, cruciale. La question est de savoir comment de l’Un le multiple peut provenir. En effet, l’Un est transcendant à ce qu’il donne, mais le Premier surabonde, et cette énergie dérivée, née de son effusion et de sa profusion, se tourne vers lui et veut en être fécondée. Affronter le problème de cette dualité apparemment irréconciliable, c’est rechercher pourquoi l’Un surabonde, quelle est la nature de cette surabondance et comment celle-ci peut être au fondement de la procession/conversion.
