Cet article s’intéresse en premier lieu au contexte de renouvellement de la recherche consacrée à la littérature de voyage, à partir de la deuxième moitié des années soixante-dix, qui permet d’en mieux saisir les objectifs intellectuels et les paramètres critiques. Ainsi, les processus de décolonisation créent certains parallèles entre la critique du colonialisme et la « critique » consacrée à la littérature de voyage et expliquent notamment l’intérêt pour les bilans, principalement liés aux travaux sur l’Ancien Régime. L’importance prêtée à ces origines et à ces « premiers contacts » est à son tour l’un des points d’attache réunissant les études sur la littérature de voyage et l’anthropologie. En deuxième lieu est considérée la relation ambivalente qu’entretient la recherche sur la « littérature de voyage » envers la nécessité d’une définition de son objet d’étude, et tout particulièrement envers la notion de « genre ». La définition de l’objet, multiforme, apparaît ainsi secondaire en comparaison à sa réhabilitation ou à son historicisation. En troisième lieu, et en guise de présentation des articles du présent numéro, sont présentés une sélection de discours critiques, de questionnements et d’enjeux ayant investi la littérature des voyages : (1) la poétique du genre, (2) les approches historiques, du new historicism à l’histoire du livre, (3) l’altérité et son étude phénoménologique ou anthropologique, (4) le rapport entre le texte et l’image, (5) la réception des récits de voyage, et notamment la récupération des voyages par la philosophie (6) le discours colonial et les théories postcoloniales, (7) les « histoires connectées ».
