Abstract
Au cours du XIX e siècle, le nombre de vagabonds présents dans la ville de Montréal s'est accru considérablement. Les autorités tenteront alors de remédier à ce problème, passant d'une répression ponctuelle dans les années 1830 à la création de divers refuges de nuit entre les années 1860 et 1900 et, enfin, à la mise sur pied de ce qui constitue la première tentative d'assistance systématique aux vagabonds, soit la création du refuge municipal Meurling en 1914. Au-delà d'une réflexion sur les conséquences historiques du phénomène, nous débouchons sur une réflexion sur les formes modernes du vagabondage et sur les processus qui les induisent.
