Abstract In den letzten Jahren gab es eine beeindruckende Zahl an Durchbrüchen im Bereich der Distickstoff‐Aktivierung. Das belegt das große Interesse, das immer noch durch dieses Molekül als Ziel von Aktivierungsstudien geweckt wird. Obwohl die Entdeckung der Distickstoff‐Fixierung bald 40 Jahre zurückliegt, muss ein umfassendes Verständnis der Faktoren, die über Fixierung oder Aktivierung entscheiden, erst noch erreicht werden. Trotzdem wurden in letzter Zeit wesentliche Fortschritte gemacht. Dieser Beitrag soll neueste Forschungsergebnisse beleuchten und dabei helfen, die Notwendigkeit eines Angriffs mehrerer Metallzentren an Distickstoff als Grundvoraussetzung für dessen weitere Spaltung und Funktionalisierung einzuschätzen.
