Abstract
Aunque cuestionado, el concepto de nación desempeña un papel central en la literatura multidisciplinaria sobre el nacionalismo, mientras que en sociología parece tener escasa relevancia. Sin embargo, abundan los discursos sobre “lo nacional”. El presente artículo ofrece una reconceptualización de las “naciones”, adoptando una perspectiva evolucionista y un marco sistémico dentro del cual las “naciones” se conciben como sistemas culturales de un tipo especial.En última instancia, las culturas nacionales están estrechamente vinculadas con los lenguajes naturales, y la adquisición de una cultura nacional se produce, a su vez, durante el proceso de adquisición de un lenguaje natural. Es así como la adquisición de un lenguaje natural se convierte en prerrequisito para el aprendizaje de otros sistemas culturales (lenguajes artificiales u otros lenguajes culturales). Las culturas nacionales funcionan como metaculturas. Constituyen también las culturas de referencia para los Estados modernos. Las culturas nacionales deben considerarse como el tipo más importante de sistema cultural en nuestros días.
