Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

A major uncertainty in the spectroscopic dating of extragalactic globular clusters concerns the degenerate effect that age and horizontal-branch morphology have on the strength of Balmer lines. In this Letter we show that the ratio between the equivalent widths of Hδ F and Hβ is far more sensitive to horizontal-branch morphology than to age, thus making it possible to break the degeneracy. We show that it is possible to distinguish intermediate-age globular clusters from those whose Balmer lines are strengthened by the presence of blue horizontal-branch stars purely on the basis of the clusters' integrated spectra . The degeneracy between age and horizontal-branch morphology can be lifted with Hβ and Hδ F line strengths from spectra with S/N ≳ 30 Å -1 , which is typical of current studies of integrated spectroscopy of extragalactic globular clusters.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
