Abstract
A small number of artefacts found during the excavation of a 17th century workshop and storehouse in Jonkoping, Sweden, indicates close contacts with the Baltic provinces. The finds include personal objects, originating in Riga and Curonia, as well as a hoard of coins minted in Reval, modern-day Tallinn - the capital of Estonia. Though the written sources offer no such information, it appears that people with close ties to the Swedish dukedom of Livland used this building in the late 1650s. The so-called Tyska maden (The German Meadow) quarter was an industrial section of the fortified city. Here German weavers, hired to start large-scale production of cloth in Sweden, had their workshops. However, this important textile industry fell into decline, partly because of diminishing orders from the Army, partly due to devastating floods in 1650. As a consequence, room was available for new activities. The finds lead us to interesting questions on topics such as the mobility of people and ideas in Early Modern times, how strangers were able to blend in with the local population and what ethnic markers people used to show different origins within a rapidly expanding state such as 17th century Sweden.
