Abstract
C’est en référence à la théorie de l’auto-organisation que des modèles dynamiques non linéaires ont été transposés depuis les sciences physiques vers les sciences sociales et, en particulier, la géographie urbaine. On analyse la compatibilité entre cette théorie et les modalités observées du changement dans les systèmes spatiaux. Un bilan provisoire des principales applications à la structuration des villes et des systèmes de villes souligne les vertus heuristiques et didactiques de ces modèles, qui peuvent engendrer des changements qualitatifs à partir de petites variations quantitatives de certains paramètres. Toutefois, l’analogie entre systèmes physiques et systèmes géographiques a des limites et le résultat des expérimentations invite à compléter ces modèles dans le cadre d’une théorie évolutive, pour tenir compte des aspects créatifs et cognitifs intervenant dans la genèse de la complexité des systèmes spatiaux.
