This article describes some of the structural engineering and construction challenges posed by the Lester B. Pearson International Airport (Toronto, Canada) Parking Garage and how they were addressed. The author considers vehicle loading, design criteria, structural systems, posttensioning corrosion protection and site inspection, in-situ strength determination, and traffic toppings. The author concludes that large airport parking garages, while sharing some design aspects with other garages, have unique requirements that may determine the appropriate structural system. It can be imprudent to rely solely on industry standards. Readers are reminded of the need for diligent site inspection and independent verification of manufacturers' claims.
