Electric propulsion is an advanced form of spacecraft propulsion that has many advantages over its traditional counterparts. Electric propulsion is highly efficient for both deep-space and near-Earth applications, and it is an excellent candidate for small satellites. This device can be useful for small satellites for the purpose of station keeping, attitude control, and possibly deorbiting at their end of life. An electrostatic thruster is investigated in this paper to understand its underlying physical processes. Different electrode configurations are investigated by numerical simulations to optimize the essential parameters such as acceleration and focusing of particle trajectories. The characterization simulations discussed are helping in the design of a colloid engine prototype.
