Cet article s’intéresse à l’exposition temporaire, en art ancien et moderne, et se situe dans une compréhension qui associe le passé au présent de l’intitulation. Illustré par des exemples précis, il distingue dans une première partie huit prototypes historiques d’intitulation : nom propre, catégorie, matériau, genre, mise en série, opérateur spatial, absolu esthétique, personnalité. Ce n’est pas un article historique et le titre s’adresse aux modes contemporains de l’intitulation. Le sens donné à l’exposition temporaire, dans sa forme actuelle, est donc central dans l’analyse. Quelle terminologie employer pour la qualifier ? La troisième et dernière partie propose de situer le titre d’exposition dans un processus d’interaction qui associe le cognitif au sensible. L’article conclut ainsi sur l’ethos aristotélicien, qui force parfois à lire le titre comme une quasi-mise en scène de l’exposition.
