Dans cet article, divisé en cinq parties de longueur inégale, les auteurs recensent les écrits sur les relations entre l'intelligence et la nutrition. Dans les deux premières parties, ils présentent brièvement les données sur l'ampleur de la malnutrition dans le monde et l'apport des études des fonctions cognitives chez l'animal pour la compréhension de l'effet de la malnutrition chez l'humain. La troisième partie, plus substantielle, est consacrée aux effets d'une dénutrition générale, d'une carence en fer, en zinc et en iode ainsi qu'aux effets des vitamines sur l'intelligence. Au cours des deux dernières parties, les auteurs mettent en évidence l'importance d'une part de l'allaitement maternel sur les performances intellectuelles et académiques et, d'autre part, du petit déjeuner sur les capacités d'apprentissage.
