Abstract
L’origine lointaine de la différenciation de deux types de A selon la postériorité remonte à la perte des /s/ finals de syllabe, acquise au 13e siècle dans l’ensemble des contextes. La distribution actuelle de ces deux types de variantes, toutefois, résulte de la généralisation progressive du timbre postérieur au contexte de durée et à la position finale à la fois, à partir de plusieurs procédés hétérogènes actifs à différentes époques, avec ou sans recoupements entre eux. L’analyse synchronique doit poser deux voyelles /a/ et /a:/ distinctes par la longueur, le timbre postérieur étant une propriété dérivée; un certain nombre d’arguments font préférer cette analyse, qui permet aussi de gagner en cohérence ailleurs dans le système. Qu’elle coïncide pour l’essentiel avec l’analyse historique du phénomène montre simplement que sur ce point précis en tout cas, la langue s’est montrée relativement conservatrice depuis quelques siècles.
