Abstract
Les Sénégalais émigrent vers diverses parties du monde et s’y établissent durablement. Ils continuent cependant d’entretenir des liens multiformes avec leur pays. Des familles se constituent sur plusieurs sites, en particulier sur la base de relations conjugales. Dans ces unités, les femmes, qu’elles soient mères ou épouses, sont souvent présentées sous des traits passifs. Cet article montre que les normes qui assignent des rôles secondaires aux femmes tendent sinon à s’effriter, du moins à être constamment rediscutées. À partir d’histoires familiales recueillies auprès d’émigrés sénégalais et de leurs parents rencontrés à Dakar et dans la moyenne vallée du fleuve Sénégal, l’article défend la thèse d’une autonomisation croissante, voire d’une émancipation des femmes à la fois au Sénégal et en terre étrangère, à la faveur notamment des migrations internationales. Le parti pris méthodologique de cet article est d’inscrire l’étude des rapports sociaux entre genres dans le contexte familial, que l’on pense souvent comme laissant peu de marge de manoeuvre aux femmes.
