Ce texte aborde la question du lien social sous l’angle de ses fondements épistémologiques. Sa contribution est donc essentiellement théorique. Nous nous interrogeons plus particulièrement sur la manière dont l’école peut contribuer, à travers l’instruction, à la constitution et à l’entretien de rapports sociaux solidaires à la fois au sein de l’école et à l’extérieur de celle-ci. La réponse à cette question nous paraît indissociable du choix paradigmatique qu’effectue l’école sur le plan épistémologique. Ce choix n’est pas neutre puisqu’il contribue à instaurer un certain type de rapport aux savoirs et à l’apprentissage. Après avoir clarifié le sens que nous donnons ici à la notion de « paradigme », nous précisons ce qu’est un paradigme socioconstructiviste, puisqu’il y est fait largement référence dans le cadre des réformes éducatives actuelles, et quelles sont les implications d’un tel choix. Ce paradigme conduit à envisager de manière particulière les rapports entre le cognitif, le social et le culturel et, partant, la contribution potentielle des savoirs scolaires à l’institution de liens sociaux. Dans cette perspective, les savoirs apparaissent à la fois comme des sources d’affranchissement personnel, des modes de participation à la culture et des formes d’engagement dans des rapports sociaux. Leur mise en scène par l’enseignant s’avère alors extrêmement importante et suppose de sa part un engagement épistémologique, ne serait-ce qu’implicite.
