En 1982, un reseau souterrain de plus de 300 m de long est decouvert sous des immeubles appartements de St-Leonard (centre nord de l'Ile de Montreal). Les galeries, le plus souvent etroites, sont rectilignes section rectangulaire et les murs presentent des traces d'emboitement. Ce sont des cavites d'origine glaciotectonique datant du Wisconsinien superieur probablement. L'epaisseur de l'encaissant (calcaires subhorizontaux interlits de shale calcareux) qui est affectee par des dislocations est d'au moins 15 m. Vu leur absence de relation avec les processus de surface, ces cavites sont difficilement reperables, et constituent une contrainte particuliere pour la construction. Impacts des cavites sur les constructions et presentation des travaux realises a posteriori sur le site de St-Leonard. Discussion de criteres susceptibles de localiser les zones ou ces cavites sont probables : les forages, les methodes indirectes, le contexte geologique et geomorphologique.
