L’existence du marché, avec ses règles qui cherchent à assurer la « liberté » des échanges, est l’expression même de la citoyenneté.Le concept du marché « libre » qui s’auto-réglemente selon des lois « naturelles » serait ainsi non seulement la négationde la liberté et de la citoyenneté mais, paradoxalement, la négation même du marché en tant qu’expression de la citoyenneté.Cette déformation du sens du « marché » découle de l’acceptation, dès le XVIIIe siècle, que la liberté du citoyen était compatibleavec la soumission personnelle (par « libre » contrat et pendant les heures de travail) aux propriétaires des moyens deproduction. À partir du moment où on a accepté cette non-liberté (selon les critères « pré-modernes ») comme étant en fait dela liberté, on a pu voir le non-citoyen comme citoyen et le marché non-réglementé (le non-marché) comme la forme la pluspure du marché. Cette confusion trouve son expression la plus claire dans la conviction qu’on peut « laisser aller » les marchéstout en restant citoyens. Dans cette voie il n’y a en fait ni liberté, ni citoyenneté, ni marché.
