Le soulèvement et la Déclaration de guerre zapatistes du 1er janvier 1994 au Mexique ont bénéficié d’une couverture internationale presque immédiate. Les communiqués qui ont suivi, signés pour la plupart par le Sous-commandant Marcos, porte-parole de l’Armée zapatiste de libération nationale, sont devenus l’emblème d’un nouveau discours et d’une nouvelle forme de l’agir politique. La rapidité avec laquelle ceux-ci ont été traduits en plusieurs langues a contribué à l’internationalisation d’un discours, ainsi qu’à la montée d’un mouvement considéré comme pionnier dans la lutte contre la mondialisation. Moyennant l’analyse des stratégies sous-jacentes aux diverses traductions françaises et anglaises des communiqués zapatistes, cet article cherche à définir la place qu’occupe la traduction, abordée tant du point de vue de sa pratique que de son sens métaphorique, au sein de l’agir et du parler zapatistes.
