Abstract
L’auteur présente ici quelques perspectives pour définir l’usage que le cinéma fait de la référence au XVIIIe siècle, à partir de deux thématiques privilégiées qui regroupent les oeuvres les plus marquantes : l’imaginaire du libertinage et la légende de la Révolution, deux objets complexes qui ont, dans les meilleurs des cas, contraint le cinéma à prendre ses distances et à s’émanciper d'une routine illustrative en inventant son propre cheminement singulier. L’importance de Diderot, qui a « parlé de cinéma » selon l’expression d’Eisenstein, et des conséquences pour les cinéastes qui se sont inspirés de ses oeuvres est ensuite mise en valeur.
