Abstract
A formal method is presented to synthesize a sequential machine as a set of sequential circuits and asynchronous modules. The sequential machine is described using a graphical Petri-net-based model that offers descriptive advantages over state diagrams. Local transformations that simplify the model and the resulting circuit are described. The model is partitioned into a set of finite-state machines that are synthesized into circuits using standard techniques. Nodes in the model that are not synthesized as part of a finite-state machine are synthesized directly as asynchronous modules.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
