Abstract
Le xxe siècle, qualifié par Felix Hobsbawm d’« âge des extrêmes », a été particulièrement marqué par le désir de repousser les limites, qu’elles soient politiques, morales ou esthétiques. Ces dernières sont transgressées par les avant-gardes artistiques qui cherchent à subvertir les codes classiques. Parmi elles, les artistes femmes remettent en question plus particulièrement le genre avec une certaine radicalité grâce à l’invention de procédés spécifiques. Cet article porte sur la pratique du photomontage par Hannah Höch (artiste dadaïste berlinoise) et Wangechi Mutu (artiste contemporaine kenyane) dans des contextes différents. Les deux créatrices font du collage une véritable technique féministe ayant pour objet de déconstruire les catégories et tendant à une forme d’universalité. Dans leur production, l’extrême qualifie la relation entre l’artiste, l’oeuvre et le spectateur ou la spectatrice et il inclut paradoxalement une limite, celle du regard.
