Abstract
Dans un fen de Vieux-Port-Burwell, deux diagrammes polliniques, à trois mètres de distance, l’un au sommet (A) et l’autre au pied (B) d’une palse, ont enregistré l’évolution géomorphologique du site. Entre 5000 et 580 BP, les deux diagrammes révèlent la même évolution : le développement progressif du fen. Les zones polliniques qui subdivisent cette période sont attribuées à des variations paléoclimatiques. Vers 3700 BP, une baisse importante de l’influx pollinique local indique des conditions plus difficiles pour la croissance des plantes. Vers 2430 BP, la césure des zones polliniques IV-III correspond dans le diagramme C, à 300 m du site, à l’apparition de tourbes minérotrophes, signe probable d’une aggradation du pergélisol. Une amélioration des conditions climatiques commence vers 1430 BP. À partir de 580 BP, les évolutions des diagrammes divergent. En B, la croissance de la tourbe s’accélère. En A, elle cesse de se former, se dessèche et se tasse. Le pollen de graminées envahit les spectres. Ces phénomènes sont une réaction à l’apparition, dans le fen, de la palse. Celle-ci date donc d’environ 600 ans. Elle résulte moins d’une oscillation climatique que du franchissement d’un seuil dans l’épaississement progressif de la tourbe.
