Dans cet article, l’auteur étudie les rapports pouvant exister à la Renaissance entre le récit de voyage et le genre épique. Dans un premier temps, l’auteur cerne quelques oppositions théoriques permettant de distinguer les deux genres, oppositions qui s’avèrent pourtant insuffisantes pour penser leur pratique à la Renaissance. Dans la suite de ces questionnements, la majeure partie de l’étude s’attache à relire un épyllion de Marc Lescarbot, La Défaite des Sauvages Armouchiquois (1607), dans sa relation intertextuelle et même interpaginale avec l’ Histoire de la Nouvelle France (1609) du même auteur afin de montrer comment l’épyllion et le récit de voyage se prolongent et s’interrogent. L’auteur de l’article analyse la présence de certains épisodes du voyage de Lescarbot dans les deux textes pour dégager la spécificité de chaque (re-)présentation et pour appréhender le rôle joué par la relation très concrète qui rattache l’épyllion au récit de voyage et vice-versa . Une telle démarche, qui tient compte de la matérialité des textes épique et viatique sous forme de livres, permet de faire remarquer une évolution majeure dans la relation de ces deux genres qui, longtemps restés en France comme incompatibles, commencent à s’ouvrir l’un à l’autre.
