Selon la théorie du circuit, la monnaie est créée à l’occasion de prêts octroyés par les banques aux entreprises. La quantité émise étant juste suffisante pour permettre à ces dernières de financer les frais de production, se pose la question de savoir comment elles pourraient récupérer dans les ventes plus d’unités monétaires qu’elles n’en ont injectées dans le circuit, autrement dit comment pourraient-elles réaliser un profit monétaire? La résolution de ce problème conditionne celui du paiement de l’intérêt par les entreprises aux banques; de nombreuses propositions ont été faites; aucune n’est satisfaisante. Pour répondre à la question, il conviendrait d’introduire dans la théorie du circuit des éléments d’analyse marxiste. La chose est possible parce que les conceptions marxiste et circuitiste de la monnaie ne sont pas irréconciliables. Sur la base de la théorie de la plus-value, Marx soutient que les salaires sont insuffisants pour assurer la vente de l’intégralité de la production; la résolution de ce problème passe par le développement du crédit aux salariés. Ce qui revient à concevoir une autre voie obligatoire d’introduction de la monnaie dans le circuit. Les entreprises pourraient ainsi récupérer dans les ventes plus d’unités monétaires qu’elles n’en ont empruntées et distribuées à l’occasion de l’activité productive, autrement dit réaliser un profit monétaire; le paiement de l’intérêt devient alors concevable.
