L’album de contes pour enfants constitue un instrument privilégié d’apprentissage parce qu’il lie très étroitement le plaisir de l’imaginaire au déchiffrage de la lecture. Les images qui tissent l’essentiel de ces récits relèvent de plusieurs codes de représentation auxquels sont associés les valeurs et les intérêts de la lecture. Nous nous sommes d’abord interrogée sur la nature de la production des signes afin de comprendre le fonctionnement des éléments des divers codes interreliés dans le récit iconique, puis nous avons élaboré une méthode d’analyse et d’observation susceptible d’en révéler certains niveaux de compréhension. Une expérimentation a été réalisée auprès de 69 enfants, âgés de 6 à 9 ans.
