Abstract
Siegfried Kracauer, exilé aux États-Unis depuis 1939, s’intéresse de près au projet de Cohen-Séat et aux travaux de l’Institut de filmologie, ce dont témoigneraTheory of Filmen 1960. S’il doit renoncer à participer au 1erCongrès de filmologie de 1947, c’est dans les colonnes de laRevue internationale de filmologieque paraît pour la première fois en Europe, en 1948, son introduction méthodologique àFrom Caligari to Hitler, sous le titre « Sociologie du cinéma ». Ce texte, qui sera suivi d’une autre étude consacrée aux types nationaux dans le cinéma américain, servira de modèle à la branche sociologique de l’Institut, considérée d’emblée comme centrale par les fondateurs du mouvement et que dirige Georges Friedmann. Edgar Morin y débutera et se montrera très proche de Kracauer jusqu’au milieu des années 1950 avant d’adopter une autre orientation de nature plutôt anthropologique. Avec le déplacement de la pensée de Cohen-Séat du côté des théories de l’information et de la communication, l’aspect anthropologique s’accuse encore, aboutissant à la théorie de « l’iconosphère ». D’autre part, se développe une sociologie du public de cinéma et non plus des oeuvres et des courants de pensée collectifs qui s’y matérialisent. L’autre dimension de la méthode kracauérienne de l’appareil psychique « collectif » est mis au second plan au sein de l’Institut au profit de la psychologie expérimentale.
