Subsea cables are widely used in the electrical submersible pump (ESP) industry for offshore platforms. Subsea cables are usually connected in two basic system configurations, i.e., to the line side and the load side of variable frequency drives. Each configuration has its advantages and disadvantages. A comprehensive study is conducted in this paper on subsea cable applications in ESP systems. Concerns such as parallel resonance, series resonance, and motor starting related to the two configurations are investigated. Considerations and recommendations are proposed for an optimized system design for each configuration.
