Depuis son lancement en 1976, la revue Hérodote s'est située au coeur de débats importants en géographie, tout en évoluant constamment. Ainsi, en 1983, le sous-titre « idéologies, géographies, stratégies » fut remplacé par celui de « revue de géographie et de géopolitique ». Les fondements de cette évolution sont retracés et la continuité des propositions principales défendues par la revue est expliquée. La nécessité des études de terrain et la légitimité épistémologique du savoir géographique sont exposées. Elles servent à établir les fondements d'une géographie géopolitique, distincte de la géographie politique, laquelle justifie l'unité et les atouts d'une géographie à la fois physique et humaine. L'efficacité du raisonnement géographique pour la compréhension des enjeux géopolitiques ne se situe pas seulement aux échelles planétaire, continentale, à celle des États, mais aussi à l'échelle régionale, ce qui implique et un retour aux sources et l'ouverture de nouveaux champs.
