La demande sociale croissante adressée à la psychologie la met en demeure de soulager et le malaise dans la civilisation et la souffrance individuelle. Le désarroi moderne trouverait sa solution dans la réponse psychothérapique individuelle, qui serait particulièrement attentive à la singularité de la souffrance, et apte à répondre aux nouveaux « droits subjectifs » des « usagers ». Le paradoxe est que ce mouvement est antinomique de la logique aujourd’hui dominante en psychiatrie, celle qui se formule dans ce que nous désignons ici comme « langue majeure », soit une langue prétendument universelle, langue de la clinique découpée par la statistique, de la gestion des populations et de la gestion financière des établissements hospitaliers. On s’attache ici à argumenter deux points. 1) Tout abord scientifique ne peut être détaché d’un point de vue, solidaire d’une méthode et d’une déontologie. La langue majeure est illégitime dans sa prétention même. 2) La différence de points de vue est particulièrement sensible dans l’opposition du singulier (du sujet) et du collectif, et dans la nécessité de séparer l’éthique de la clinique de la défense de la société. La psychanalyse radicalise cette opposition.
