Résumé Suffit-il de faire appel à un nouveau concile soit en raison du « dépassement » de Vatican II, soit en raison de l’urgence à traiter des questions nouvelles? Si la fréquence des conciles n’est pas déterminée par le droit, leur convocation est sujette à l’appréciation de la situation. Or, il s’agit par là d’accroître l’unité de l’Église, d’affronter ensemble les questions nouvelles, et de disposer de figures institutionnelles adéquates. C’est pourquoi, la distinction entre la conciliarité fondamentale de l’Église, et le concile comme figure institutionnelle qui l’exprime, s’avère ici essentielle. Sans se fixer sur l’idée d’un Vatican III, il est nécessaire d’imaginer de nouveaux modes d’expression de la conciliarité, adaptés aux conditions et exigences du temps.
