1. Madrid se moderniza.El escaso ideal moderno es ideal de escaparates (Gómez de la Serna).En 1916 apenas había en Madrid unas 128 tiendas de lujo. La Primera Guerra no había terminado todavía cuando ya empiezan a asomarse a los escaparates de las tiendas objetos conmemorativos de episodios bélicos. Son cajas de bombones de aluminio que imitan proyectiles; relojes de sobremesa, barómetros y escribanías construidas con cascos teutónicos o franceses, obuses, balines y granadas; alfileres de corbata que reproducen un zepelín o un submarino. Siempre estos objetos de bisutería nos parecieron de un gusto propio de tenderos, cobradores de tranvía o concejales de Madrid (J.Francés, 1916).En 1917, abre sus puertas en el primer tramo de Gran Vía la camisería Sánchez Rubio; en el 19, la camisería de lujo Butler y la joyería Pereira; hacia el 20, la tienda de lámparas y bronces de arte Zúmel y la joyería Aldao; en el 23, el Palacio del Libro de la editorial Calpe, con enormes escaparates a la Gran Vía . En lugar de decir salir a dar una vuelta se empieza a decir salir a ver escaparates.
