Abstract
De 1850 à 1914, de nombreuses monographies régionales sont rédigées au Québec. On assiste à l'éclosion d'un genre. Une tradition géographique s'établit ainsi. La monographie de colonisation procède d'une démarche appliquée. Elle recourt à un langage scientifique tout en servant des objectifs nationaux. Sur cette lancée, la géographie québécoise tend à une forme académique avec Miller, puis débouche sur la monographie blanchardienne. Le présent article vise à dégager le plan typique, les sources utilisées, le traitement des données et des informations, les méthodes et les principaux concepts véhiculés par un tel genre. Il insiste particulièrement sur le concept de région qui s'éloigne fortement du paradigme régional à la Vidal. La monographie de colonisation participe de l'essor de la géographie coloniale. L'effort théorique en vue d'asseoir la légitimité scientifique d'une telle entreprise n'est pas concluant. Peut-on néanmoins parler d'une école québécoise de géographie?
