Abstract
Cet article explore les fondements, posés dans les années 1920, de la conception québécoise du monument historique et, plus largement, du patrimoine. On y découvre comment et pourquoi le patrimoine, théoriquement constitué des trésors - les monuments historiques en question - voués par une société à ses légataires, a été en pratique déterminé par un Étranger survenu dans le paysage de la province au tournant du XX e siècle : le touriste, plus précisément le touriste étatsunien, dit « l’Américain ». Celui-ci, dès lors substitué au Canadien anglais dans le rôle de « l’Autre », imposa, par l’entremise de l’institution québécoise des monuments historiques (née en 1922) et à grand renfort de bienfaits économiques aussi évidents que nécessaires, son propre itinéraire à la territorialisation patrimoniale du Québec, c'est-à-dire à l’identification de ses monuments, à leur localisation et à la démarcation des frontières du « terroir » protégé et mis en valeur. En quelques années, en effet, l’étranger-touriste laissa une empreinte indélébile dans un tableau de la patrimonialisation que sa piste, pour peu qu’on la suive, révèle au Québec sous un nouveau jour.
