Le Moyen Âge constitue un thème de prédilection dans Gaspard de la nuit , dont la fonction ne se réduit pas à celle d’ornement. En effet, le Moyen Âge y représente plutôt un lieu de réflexion du monde qui permet à l’auteur de formuler un commentaire désenchanté sur sa propre époque. En s’intéressant plus particulièrement aux échos existants entre l’oeuvre d’Aloysius Bertrand et celles de Barante et de Rabelais, cet article montre que l’auteur romantique élabore un rapport historique et grotesque au monde qui ouvre directement la voie à une culture où le Livre se trouve désormais envisagé comme seul espace possible de vérité.
